Quel que soit le mode de transport choisi (route, chemin de fer, voie maritime, fluviale ou aérienne), vos marchandises sont exposées à de nombreux risques : détériorations, manquants, pertes de poids résultant d’un accident ou événement de transport, d’un incendie, d’une « mouille » (risques courants), d’une grève, d’un vol, d’une émeute, d’un acte de terrorisme ou encore d’une guerre (risques exceptionnels).
L’usager n’a pas à prouver la faute du transporteur, mais il existe, en transport intérieur ou international, des cas d’exonération de responsabilité. Les transporteurs bénéficient, en outre, de limitations de responsabilité : sauf cas de faute lourde ou inexcusable de leur part, ils sont en droit de ne rembourser qu’une partie de la valeur réelle des marchandises endommagées.
L’expéditeur a donc un intérêt certain à assurer lui-même les marchandises transportées.
Toutefois les contrats d’assurance ne couvrent pas les dommages dus à un emballage insuffisant ou défectueux. L’emballage doit donc être adapté à la nature de la marchandise et au mode de transport utilisé afin de prévenir les risques de détériorations.

L’assurance du transporteur est bien souvent insuffisante dans son étendue et son montant pour couvrir la marchandise lors de son transport et de son stockage. La garantie Stock et Transit vient alors renforcer ce dispositif.
